Link Skills to Training Sessions
When you create or edit a training session, you can link specific skills from your active plans to that session. When a member is marked as Attended, those skills are automatically signed off for them — no manual entry needed.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- Brigade admin or organisation admin role
- At least one active skills plan with enrolled members
- The Skills Maintenance module enabled
Link skills when creating a training session
Section titled “Link skills when creating a training session”- Navigate to Training and click Create Training Session
- Fill in the training details (title, date, type, etc.) as usual
- Scroll to the Skills completed by attendance section
- The section shows all active skills plans organised by plan → topic → skill
- Tick the skills that this training session will demonstrate or practise
- Click Create Training Session
When any enrolled member is later marked as Attended on this training session, those ticked skills are automatically recorded as completed for them.
Link skills when editing a training session
Section titled “Link skills when editing a training session”- Open the training session
- Click Edit
- Find the Skills completed by attendance section
- Tick or untick skills as needed
- Click Update Training Session
Recurring training series
Section titled “Recurring training series”If you are editing a recurring parent session, a checkbox appears at the bottom of the skills section:
Apply skills selection to all future sessions in this series
Tick this to propagate your skills selection to all upcoming instances in the series. Leave it unticked to update only the session you are editing.
How auto-completion works
Section titled “How auto-completion works”- An admin creates or edits a training session and selects linked skills
- Members attend the training and are marked as Attended in the attendance list
- For each marked-attended member who is enrolled in the linked plan, a completion record is automatically created for each selected skill
- The completion is attributed to the training session and visible in the member’s progress view
If a member is already marked as completed for a skill (in the current cycle), the auto-completion is skipped — no duplicates are created.
Viewing linked skills on a training session
Section titled “Viewing linked skills on a training session”From the training detail page, the linked skills are displayed in the training resources section. Click on a linked skill to see which plan it belongs to.
Which skills to link
Section titled “Which skills to link”Link skills that are genuinely practised or assessed during the session — not just mentioned. The purpose is to create an accurate record that a member demonstrated the competency.
Good candidates for linking:
- Practical drills that directly match a competency item (e.g. a BA drill → “SCBA donning and doffing”)
- Refresher sessions for specific procedures
- Scenario-based training that covers identifiable skills
Avoid linking:
- Skills that are only briefly discussed but not practised
- Skills that require individual assessment rather than group attendance
Efficient use with recurring training
Section titled “Efficient use with recurring training”For regular weekly drills that cover the same skills, link the skills to the parent recurring session and propagate to all future sessions. This means every time you mark attendance, relevant completions are recorded automatically.
